Laser safety

Lasers are categorized into several different classes depending on the extent of the potential hazard associated with the laser, with Class 1 being the least dangerous and Class 4 the most dangerous. The United States Food and Drug Administration has indicated that Class 4 lasers may pose an "immediate skin hazard and eye hazard from exposure to either the direct or reflected beam; may also present a fire hazard."

xTool MetalFab Laser Welder is a Class 4 machine, which includes a Class 4 working laser and a Class 1 indicator laser. The working laser is invisible with a wavelength of 1080 ± 10 nm. For detailed power information, please refer to the corresponding manual of the machine. When using this accessory with xTool MetalFab Laser Welder, direct exposure of the eyes or skin to the working laser radiation may cause serious injury. Laser diffuse reflection and specular reflection may also cause serious retinal and/or corneal damage, leading to permanent eye injury. In addition, during the laser cleaning process, the interaction between high-power laser beams and the processed material may generate heat and sparks, which can also lead to risks of eye and skin injuries. This accessory is intended for professional use only and requires special attention for operational safety.

Follow the safety precautions:

  • ONLY professionally trained personnel are allowed to use the accessory for laser cleaning. A qualified Laser Safety Officer (LSO) must be designated and the device shall be operated by or under the guidance of the LSO. The LSO is obliged to evaluate the laser safety risks and set up safety control mechanisms to ensure the safety of operators and prevent untrained persons from entering the laser radiation hazard area.
  • A laser-controlled area should be established, and this accessory must only be operated within the designated area. You can set up a laser-controlled area by using the remote interlock function of the access-control key. Visit support.xtool.com/article/1367 to find the operation guide.
  • Ensure that only trained professionals with PPE enter the laser radiation area. You can visit support.xtool.com/article/1444 to learn about the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) and Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD) of Class 4 xTool laser machines.
  • All personnel entering the laser-controlled area must wear:

- Laser safety goggles or a laser safety face shield that provides shielding against laser beams at the wavelength range of 1080 ± 10 nm, with an optical density greater than 6

- Laser- and heat-resistant gloves, clothing, and aprons

  • When using this accessory with xTool MetalFab Laser Welder, appropriate protective barriers should be established around the laser beam path according to the processing scenario to restrict the laser beam from spreading to surrounding areas. The barriers installed within the laser-controlled area should be made of laser-safe materials (refer to IEC 60825-4 or other applicable standards) and capable of withstanding both direct and diffuse laser beams.
  • During cleaning, always maintain a 20° to 70° angle between the accessory and the cleaning surface.

  • In the laser propagation path,

- Do not stand in or reach into the path, which may cause injury;

- Keep flammable objects away to prevent fire hazards;

- Do not place obstructions, which may affect the cleaning process.
