How to Measure the Focal Length Manually

This article applies to:

xTool S1 with all laser modules.

About This Guide

When the distance sensor of S1 is faulty, and the auto-measure function is ineffective, please follow the instructions below to measure the distance manually.

If you can't set the distance value or input the wrong value, the laser module will move down on the Z-axis, and the laser spot won't fall on the correct position of the processing material surface, so the engraving image is not good. When the auto-measure function of S1 is ineffective, please manually measure the distance according to the steps below.

The distance value on XCS is the distance of the laser module moving down on the Z-axis plus the distance of the probe drawing back plus the device structure tolerance. The value is equal to the distance between the laser module top and the processing material surface minus 100mm. The manual-measure mode does not support processing materials with curved surfaces, but it supports laser flat and laser cylindrical modes.

Steps to Manual-Measure

1. Measure the Distance

Measure the distance between the top of the laser module and the upper surface of the material with a ruler.

Note: Before measuring, make sure the device is powered on and the material is placed horizontally to get the correct distance value.

2. Set the Distance in XCS

If XCS uses mm as the distance unit, the distance unit value is equal to the distance between the laser module top and the processing material surface minus 100mm.

If XCS uses inches as the distance unit, the distance unit value is equal to the distance between the laser module top and the processing material surface minus -3.937in.

Take the photo screenshot below as an example. The distance between the laser module top and the processing material surface is 132mm, and we need input 32mm as the distance unit value in XCS.

3. Try It Out With a Processing

After inputting the distance unit, click "process" and check if the engraved image is clear. If not, please repeat the above steps to manually measure the distance unit.
