Ink Question- Lines and bleeding in the design; a basecoat product

I just installed a new  cartridge for ink.  When I attempt to print both on paper and on wood the picture has streaks in it.   I have worked through the support pages and tried the steps to unclog the cartridge.  I have run the test procedures and it hasn't made a difference.  I attempted to calibrate the cartridge but the cross comes out with multiple “crosses” so I am unsure which crosse I need to place it over to complete it.  ( See attached photo titled Calibration Test)

One of the suggestions on the support documentation using a base substance under the ink to help prevent the bleeding.  Can anyone recommend a good one for light wood?

Also, has anyone else had the “light and dark streak” problem and figured out how to fix it when the standard support methods don't work.

I appreciate any guidance anyone can provide.  :-)
