Embossing - First Layer

When doing an emboss, is there a way to have it not do anything for the “White” area that should be the top most.  I am trying to do am embossing on some metal.  I created a black and white image, and I do not want to do anything on the area that is white, so that it can blend more easily into the material.

As it stands right now, i end up with a box around my design that is white in my image.  For example, if I just want to emboss some initials, it would do the first pass on the entire image instead of just where I have text.  Yes I know in this example, I could use a different type of engraving, but the specific type of image does not matter.  The first pass takes off the first layer of material on what I am working with.

Hopefully my question makes sense and there is some way to “ignore” the white section already or something that can be added.

I have included a sample image that has 6 shades of grey-black, and then a white box.  Right now, it does that white section on the first pass so I end up with the upper most layer of my material being removed.
