Something to try to eliminate wood graining and two requests to add to features to the software progarm

I initially posted this to a question posed by todd.n.beaulieu but it didn't bump the thread and I wanted to get Xtool's thoughts on two adds to the program in light of the response, so sorry Todd didn't mean to Hijack your post.

Todd's question was regarding being able to burn horizontal and vertically to eliminate wood graining. This was my response for something that worked for me and the two software feature add questions.

Try de focusing your laser. I was running tumblers and was getting wood graining when I was set on the true focus point.

I did a test similar to a focus test in Lightburn with a 5mm wide rectangle by 140 mm. The material was propped up on one end so it sloped along the path.

What I found was a pretty generous sweet spot where I was getting a totally grain free burn.  In my case I reset the focus that was measured at 112 to a focus manually entered of 118.

I'm wondering if Xtool added the option to change focus on engraving as it does for cutting on multipass work if that would solve this issue.

I was running two passes on the tumbler with settings of Power 10, Speed 200, Passes 2, lines 260, bi directional, pulse 200 and freq of 800.  The higher frequency helped smooth out the pattern. Lower freq (50) looked like it was raked, the higher freq looked more polished than striated.

Hope this helps, if anyone has any luck with a great tumbler engraving in one pass I'd appreciate it if you would share your settings as I hadn't found any one pass settings that produced anything near as good as my diode laser does.

One other thing I learned, was doing multiple passes on the roller gave me a slight ghosting, I don't think the roller reversed as accurately as the chuck for the second pass.

And if Xtool reads this, one other thing that would be really handy is to add a pass count indicator on the screen that has the start button.  When cutting I realize sometimes I'm through the material already and I don't have the pass count, so I'm just over cutting and over heating the material, and occasionally the cutting passes are slightly different from the material test results.
