I hope it's okay to post this here since it isn't a question but a solution. :-)
Since Cricut pens are a bit too long and I can't use them without being able to close the lid my solution was to shorten the pens by cutting at least 13 mm off the back end using an Xacto saw. I pulled the end plug out and inserted it back into the end to keep the ink from possibly leaking and drying out.
Here is an example of the use of four pen types. From top to bottom, 0.4 mm point, 1.0 mm point, 0.8 mm glitter gel pen, and a 2.0 mm calligraphy pen.
I'm going to try some color pens next to get more variety and hopefully some stronger colors. A few of the xTool pen colors are a bit weak.
