Many users are struggling to achieve the desired results when cutting MDF material or failing to cut it. So in this guide, we'll take you through various solutions to optimize the cutting settings of D1 Pro and increase the success rate of cutting through materials.
Cutting denser surfaces like MDF might be challenging with the default or preset settings. To tackle this, we need to adjust the settings wisely while keeping in mind the test results of various materials. Here's a step-by-step solution to ensure you achieve the perfect cut.
Start by testing your material at different settings to determine the optimal combination. Our fellow makers offered a good way of recording parameter tests! Document the results in an Excel sheet with the formula: (Percentage of power/speed (in mm/sec)) * passes = Burnpower on the material. Make sure to add comments, including the material used and the outcome.
For example:
4mm softwood: 100% / 4 * 1 = 25 Burnpower (Works well on wood, doesn't get through knotholes
4mm softwood: 80% / 5 *2 = 32 Burnpower (Cuts nicely, gets through most knotholes)
💡You can check our xTool D1 Engraving & Cutting Parameters for Reference, and download the Parameters Testing File.xcs to conduct your own experiments. The array feature in XCS software would let yoou set up multiple boxes, each with varying power and speed settings. Start with 10% power at 1mm/s speed.
Use slower speeds, more power, or increase the number of passes to ensure better cutting. You can even experiment with air assist, which can vastly improve your cuts, especially on MDF.
Place the aluminum plate under your material, use a riser base or honeycomb to have an air gap. This can offer better ventilation and improve the cutting process.
If you're using the D1 Pro 20w, utilize the additional focus adjustment on the right for cutting thicker materials. Ideally, adjust it to half the material thickness so the laser focuses at the center of the cut rather than the top for a more efficient process.
By following these recommendations and conducting your own test, we believe you'll overcome cutting challenges and achieve the perfect cut every time. Happy laser-making! 😁
