In this article, the effects, advantages, and disadvantages of 4 different coloring agents will be introduced briefly. You'll also get some helpful tips on using them.

Let's take a look!

Colored Pencils/ Markers

  • Advantages: Detailing, vivid color, and a precise coloring area
  • Disadvantages: The downside is that the strokes may remain on the painted surface.

It is not advisable to use them to color a large area since it will be very time-consuming.

Alcohol Inks

The colors of alcohol inks are very bright and their special composition is especially suitable for use on smooth surfaces, such as glass, metal, acrylic, etc.

Alcohol inks should be used with precautions since they can be toxic if not used properly. So, make sure you know the tools you're using.

Spray Paint

Quick and easy

  1. Clean the surface of the material. A rough surface is better for painting and the color will not fade easily. If the surface is smooth, it needs to be sanded so the paint can be more durable.
  2. Primer your piece before painting. This will help the paint adhere better to the surface and improve the paint colors.
  3. If you are using light-colored spray paint, you may need to apply multiple coats, or spray a layer of white paint on the surface of the material first.
  4. If you only want to paint an area of a surface, you can use tape to cover the area that does not need to be painted and remove the tape when you are finished.
  5. Keep an old rag handy at all times during the painting process so that you can clean up immediately if the paint needs revision or gets dirty.
  6. Safety: Since spray paint can be toxic, it is best to wear disposable gloves and a mask, preferably a 3M protective mask while painting. And, don't forget about ventilation.

Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paints are cheap and easy to use. They have no pungent odor and are safe and suitable for use at home. Depending on the coloring area, you can also choose different types of brushes for coloring. It is recommended to use nylon brushes, so the coloring will be even and smooth.

Disadvantages: The paint is not easy to clean when it's dried. If unfortunately, it gets on your clothes, clean it as soon as possible, otherwise, it will be an eternal mark.
