When color-printing on wood with the xTool M2, many users notice a few recurring issues:
- The same image looks very different from one board to another — vivid on some, gray or dull on others.
- Fine details bleed easily, and edges aren't crisp.
This happens because wood is a natural, porous material. Different woods vary in color, grain, water absorption, and surface roughness, and all of these directly affect how the ink adheres and how the colors show up.
Choosing the right surface prep for your project before you print can noticeably improve the results.
No Primer vs. Primer Spray: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Wood Printing Tips and Safety Advice
- Apply thin coats and let them dry fully. Shake the spray well before use and apply thin, multiple coats. Let the primer dry completely before printing for more stable, sharper results. To check if it's dry, lightly touch the edge of the sprayed area.
- Test on scrap wood first. Different woods have different priming needs. Try a scrap piece before your real project, then adjust the amount of spray and your print settings based on the results.
- Seal finished pieces for durability. For long-term display, apply a clear protective topcoat (such as xTool Clear Matte Paint Spray) after printing to improve scratch and stain resistance.
- Always work safely. Stay in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames and heat, and wear a mask and gloves. If the spray contacts your eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention if needed.
