Photo on Stone: The Sanded & Painted Slate Method
Updated Mar 27,2026
Updated Mar 27,2026

In this video, I show you step by step how to engrave a photo on a sanded, then painted white and then black slate coaster using a laser. We go over how to prep your image, choose the right settings. Slate is a great material for photo engraving, but it does require the right contrast and setup to get clean detail. This tutorial is beginner friendly and works for anyone looking to turn photos into personalized slate coasters for gifts, craft fairs, or selling in their laser business. If you are using an xTool laser, these tips apply to machines like the F2, P2, and P3, but the process is the same for most diode, IR, and CO₂ lasers. You will just need to find the setting for the different machines. I am using the F2 Portable today.
