Engraving Layered Paint with a Diode Laser

Updated Mar 27,2026

In this video, I show how to get clean, detailed laser engravings on painted surfaces using a diode laser. I walk through the settings I use—including speed, power, and lines per centimeter (LPC)—and explain how to dial them in depending on your paint and material type. I also demonstrate how to create multi-colored engraved lettering for signs without using masking, making this a faster, cleaner process for painted wood or MDF signage. Whether you’re working on decorative signs, custom gifts, or shop projects, engraving over paint opens up a ton of creative options—and this video shows how to make it work. 🖌️ Project done on painted wood using the xTool S1 40W ‪ 👍 Like, subscribe, and let me know in the comments what paint or finish you’ve engraved on!
