8 Solutions to Improve Weak Network Connectivity

Updated Dec 4,2025
1. Optimize Router Placement
Steps:
Find the central area of your home, usually the living room or hallway.
Place the router in this central location, keeping it at least 1 meter away from walls to reduce signal loss.
Position the router at least 1 meter above the ground, such as on a shelf or table.
Ensure there are no metal objects, large appliances, or water sources near the router, as these can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal.
2. Update Router Firmware
Steps:
Connect your computer or mobile device to the router’s Wi-Fi network.
Enter the router’s management address in a browser (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
Log in with the username and password (default is typically admin/admin).
Find the “Firmware Update” or “System Upgrade” section.
Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware.
3. Adjust Wireless Channel
Steps:
Log in to the router's management interface.
Go to “Wireless Settings” or “Wi-Fi Settings.”
Select the 2.4GHz wireless channel settings.
Use “Auto Select,” or manually choose a channel with minimal interference. Wi-Fi analyzer tools can help you find the best channel.
4. Set QoS (Quality of Service)
Steps:
Log in to the router's management interface.
Find “QoS Settings” or “Bandwidth Control.”
Assign priorities as needed, such as giving streaming or online gaming higher priority.
Save the settings and restart the router.
5. Enable Guest Network
Steps:
Log in to the router's management interface.
Find the “Guest Network” or “Guest Wi-Fi” option.
Enable the guest network and set a separate password.
This allows visitors to use Wi-Fi without affecting the performance of your main network.
6. Restart the Router
Steps:
Locate the router’s reset button, usually a small button that may have a lightning icon.
Use a thin object (such as a paperclip) to press and hold the reset button for 5–10 seconds.
The router will restart and return to default settings.
Log in to the management interface again and reconfigure your network.
7. Use a Wi-Fi Signal Booster or Extender
Steps:
Purchase a Wi-Fi booster or extender that is compatible with your router brand.
Place the extender in an area with weak signal coverage.
Follow the extender’s instructions to connect it to the main router.
Restart both the router and the extender, then check if signal coverage has improved.
8. Consider Upgrading to a Dual-Band or Tri-Band Router
Steps:
Choose a dual-band or tri-band router based on your home network needs and budget.
Set up the new router according to the installation guide.
Copy your old router’s settings (such as Wi-Fi name and password) to the new router.
Test the new router’s signal coverage and speed.
