Troubleshoot Burnt Nozzle for Laser Welding
Updated Jul 2,2025
Updated Jul 2,2025

Issue description

The welding nozzle is burned out after welding.

Possible causes

  • Improper operation: During welding, the nozzle moves too close to the molten pool or touches the molten metal, getting burned by hot splashes.
  • Contaminated or damaged lens protector: The lens protector is dirty or burned, covered with grease, dust, spatter, or burn marks, which causes the laser beams to diffuse and scatter to the inner wall of the nozzle and gradually burn the nozzle.
  • Deviated laser beams: The laser beams deviate from the intended path and hit the inner wall of the nozzle.
  • Processing highly reflective metals: Highly reflective metals (such as aluminum and brass) can reflect laser beams into the inner wall of the nozzle and gradually burn the nozzle.

Troubleshooting procedure

Please follow these steps in order.

STEP 1: Adjust the welding angle

Maintain a 30° to 70° angle between the welding head and the welding plane.

Note: If the problem persists, go to the next step.

STEP 2: Check the lens protector

1. Turn off the machine and move it to a relatively dust-free environment.

2. Wear lint-free gloves. Then, remove the cover and take out the lens protector closest to the nozzle.

3. Check the lens protector.
■ If the lens protector is slightly dirty, use a cotton swab dipped with alcohol to clean it. Then, install it back to the welding head.

■ If the lens protector is burned or heavily dirty and uncleanable, replace it with a new one.

For the replacement guide, please refer to Clean or Replace the Lens Protector for xTool MetalFab Laser Welder.

Note: If the problem persists, go to the next step.

STEP 3: Check if the welding head emits a clear and integral red light spot

When the machine is turned on, the guide laser is automatically turned on and emits a red light spot that indicates where the laser beams will hit during laser processing. Therefore, if the welding head emits a clear and integral red light spot, it indicates that the laser beams can come out from the aperture smoothly.

If the welding head does not emit a clear and integral red spot or if the spot is not centered, please calibrate the red spot position. For detailed instructions, see the following tutorial:

STEP 4: Prepare spare nozzles for replacement

If you need to process highly reflective metals (such as aluminum and brass) in a high frequency, please prepare spare welding nozzles for replacement.

Highly reflective metals can reflect laser beams into the inner wall of the nozzle, causing accelerated wear and tear. If you find the nozzle is burned through or deformed, replace it with a new one immediately.
