Why is the red dot on my M1 laser device not centered?

It is common for some users to notice that the red dot on the M1’s baseplate is not centered. This is a normal condition and should not be considered a cause for concern. It is important to clarify that the red dot serves solely for the automatic measurement function. Below is a detailed explanation:

M1 Red Dot

Working Principle

  • The red dot is emitted from the upper-right corner of M1 and projected onto the baseplate at an angle (refer to the image below). This angled projection means the position of the red dot will vary depending on the material's thickness. During the "Auto-Measure" process, the camera analyzes the red dot's position to calculate material thickness, with a typical accuracy of ±1mm, which falls within acceptable production standards.
M1 Red Projection

Below are two scenarios that explain the observed red dot discrepancies:

Scenarios:

  • Red Dot Discrepancy Between Material Surface and Baseplate:
    • This variation is normal and expected due to the angled projection.
  • Red Dot Discrepancy on Baseplate but Normal Measurement Value:
    • If the measured value is outside the range of 3 ± 1mm, it may indicate potential issues with the "Auto-Measure" function. Perform the verification procedure below to diagnose the presence of the issues and determine whether further calibration is entailed. If so, follow the instructions in the tutorial link below.
    • Please consult: How to Calibrate the Auto-Measure for xTool M1 for advice.

Verification Steps:

  1. Place a flat 3mm basswood board on the baseplate.
  2. Use the "Auto-measure" feature to check the material thickness in xTool Creative Space (XCS).
  3. If the result is within 3 ± 1mm, the machine is functioning properly.

📌 Important Note
The red dot's position may vary slightly due to minor assembly tolerances, but this does not affect M1’s performance or functionality. Each machine is calibrated before leaving the factory to ensure precise operation.
