What is smart engraving?

Exclusive to xTool F1&F1 Ultra: Smart Engraving is a game-changer for projects with large empty spaces, like engraving within a big rectangle. This feature smartly navigates the laser to avoid blank spaces, significantly reducing travel time and focusing on the areas that matter. When working with multiple patterns, Smart Engraving also optimizes the path within each pattern for maximum efficiency.

Note: When F1&F1 Ultra turns on the smart engraving function, it may lead to some problems such as line leakage and color difference when processing some materials, such as metal business cards, which are mainly caused by processing accuracy and equipment heat accumulation. Therefore, smart engraving is not performed in auto planning mode, and disabled in user defining mode by default.

How does it work?

For an engraved vector object, convert it into a compound path object composed of horizontal lines, with the same size and shape (the horizontal lines need to completely cover all filled parts in the graphic without any missing or exceeding parts).
  • Rule Definitions:
  1. Starting processing point of the object: Take the X coordinate of the end point of the previous processed object. Among all the endpoints of the horizontal lines of the current object, find the point Y that is closest to point X. Use point Y as the starting processing point of the current object and start processing from Y.
  2. Process the horizontal line objects one by one using the greedy strategy: After processing the nth horizontal line, for all the remaining unprocessed horizontal lines, find the nearest endpoint and move to that endpoint to start processing the next horizontal line.

Note: The above rules explain how to plan the internal path of an engraved object under smart engraving. If there are multiple engraved objects, the greedy strategy is used to plan the path between objects.

How to use it?

(1) Use the tools on the left side bar to create objects. You can import images, insert shapes, enter text, or draw vectors as needed.
(2) After finishing all steps before processing, click the icon next to the Process button, select User defining and enable Smart.
(3) When enabled the Smart function, the laser module smartly navigates the laser to avoid blank spaces.

Tips for Smart Engraving:
In manual planning mode, activating the Smart Engraving feature without selecting "by layer" will mimic the effect of the Auto-plan mode, offering an intelligent blend of efficiency and precision.
For intricate designs, the Smart Engraving may result in paths that appear to jump around, occasionally leaving gaps to be filled later. Use our preview tool to understand the engraving path better and avoid any surprises.
