Troubleshoot "Start processing with a project file or with the lid open" (M222 S7) for xTool S1

Issue description

When this issue happens, you should see a pop-up error message that says "Start processing without a project file or with the lid opened" with the error code "M222 S7".

 

Troubleshooting

This error message pops up usually because the lid is not closed or the lid detection doesn't work properly due to firmware or other reasons. Please follow the steps below to troubleshoot.

 

#1 Close the lid properly

The machine is equipped with a detection mechanism for the position of the lid. If it's not closed properly or obstructed by foreign objects during a task, the alarm will be triggered. To solve this:

  • Check and make sure the cover is fully closed.
  • Check for foreign objects stuck between the lid and the main body.

 

#2 Upgrade the firmware

New firmware is released regularly to fix issues and deliver the latest functions. If it's not up-to-date, some issues may occur. Please make sure you are using the latest firmware for your machine.

  1. Connect the S1 to XCS
  2. Click on Device Settings > Firmware Version > Check for Updates
  3. If the firmware is not up-to-date, please refer to this guide to upgrade.

 

#3 Restore the detection feature

The machine's lid detection feature is set to be enabled by default when it leaves the factory. If it's disabled somehow, the detection function won't work. To solve this:

  1. Connect the S1 with Lightburn, and please note that XCS and Lightburn cannot be open at the same time. For details, please refer to this guide.
  2. Enter the command M802 in the Console section of the Lightburn software to determine whether the lid detection feature is enabled based on the returned information.
    1. If the response is M802 S0, the lid detection is enabled as it's supposed to be.
    2. If the response is M802 S1, the lid detection is disabled. Please enter the command M802 S0 to enable the feature.

Note: You can contact our support team and provide us with the machine's serial number (SN). We will trace the production records to confirm whether the machine was correctly set up before leaving the factory.

 

#4 Check the magnetic sensors

The machine detects the lid's status through magnetic induction. For this purpose, a magnet is installed on each side of the lid, and two corresponding Hall sensors are fitted in the machine's front plate. If there is a malfunction or misalignment of the magnets or sensors, the detection may not work. To solve this:
 

First. Check the placement of the megnets on the lid.

  1. Remove the screws fixing the magnets on top of the lid
  2. Swap the magnetic poles to see if the issue resolves. 
  3. If the problem persists, proceed to the next step.
 
Second. Check if the megnets and the hall sensor are faulty.
  1. Find a magnetic item, such as a refrigerator magnets, and place it in front of the hall sensors shown in the picture.
  2. If the XCS stops displaying the error message, it indicates that the sensor can detect your magnets but not the ones on the lid. The magnets on the lid are not functioning correctly. Please contact support for a replacement magnet.
  3. If you have already checked the lid's magnets and placing a magnet on the outer casing of the Hall sensor did not stop the error message from being prompted, please contact our support team for a replacement hall sensor.
